Please read the preface to The House on Mango Street, which is also written by the author, Sandra Cisneros. On Thursday, we discussed the nature of home and community. She titles the preface, “A House of My Own,” continuing this theme.

Take notes on the preface, paying special attention to the personality of the author. Who is she? What are her values? What are her thoughts on home?

I mentioned how taking notes for English class is a bit different from taking notes for science, for example. Instead of noting tiny little details, focus on who the author is and how he or she writes. Below is the first paragraph from the preface, and then some notes that I might take on it.

The young woman in this photograph is me when I was writing House on Mango Street. She’s in her office, a room that had probably been a child’s bedroom when families lived in this apartment. It has no door and is only slightly wider than the walk-in pantry. But it has great light and sits above the hallway door downstairs, so she can hear her neighbors come and go. She’s posed as if she’s just looked up from her work for a moment, but in real life she never writes in this office. She writes in the kitchen, the only room with a heater. (xi)

Notes

-she thinks of herself in the past as a different person, referring to herself in the third person

-she is aware of histories of houses, referring to families that may have lived there

-she is aware of others that share her home, that are part of her community, referring to her neighbors

-her home is modest, as the kitchen is the only room in the house with heat

You need to have the book as a visual prop during your book talk.
Use this script to help you plan your book talk. The parts of a basic book talk are listed below. What follows the asterisk (*) in each line is how you might go beyond the basics.
Tell your audience the title of the book and the author. *Maybe this author has written other books like this one? Any other interesting details about this author?
Describe the main setting in your novel. How and why is the setting important to the novel and your understanding of what happens in the book? *In what ways is the setting realistic or unrealistic?
What is the main conflict in the book and what type of conflict is it? *How does this conflict relate to real life?
Read an important passage from the novel. Tell us before you read it: h ow it fits into the plot (meaning, not only which part of the plot line it is–exposition, conflict, climax, or resolution–but also give us an introduction. Ex: The passage I’m going to read is from the part in the novel when Joe tells Wendy that he’s been secretly videotaping his uncle, who has been sneaking into his father’s office early each morning. It shows that. . . . Tell us why this passage is important.
Tell us, in your own words–write a theme statement–what the theme of this novel is. How do you know? *How is this theme relevant to your own or others’ lives?
Rate the book on a scale from one to five. See your script for more on this. You must justify your rating.
Each book talk will be given orally in front of the class and only needs to be about three to five minutes in length. It is a good idea to write out what you are going to say to your audience beforehand so that you do not forget anything.

Look at all the resources in pop culture that you have access to. You can consider genres such as sitcoms, television dramas, children’s
cartoons, movies, commercials, newspaper editorials, and so forth.
• Provide an example for each of six characteristics of transcendental thought.
• Choose a different quotation for each category. You can repeat the sources that you choose but should find different
example quotations or actions. All quotes should come from RWE, HDT, or MLK (Dickinson and Fuller are possibilities as well).
• Look for examples from multiple genres. Include at least three different genres in your project. (Not all movie clips or editorials or comics).
• Be sure that you provide explanations for the quotations or examples that you’ve chosen that show why each is an example
of transcendentalist thought. Explanations and bibliography will be due on turn-it-in by 8 am on 1/18/12.

Your presentations will still be due beginning Friday in Class.
